Nestled in a historic building on Piazza della Signoria, Il Nido is a bookstore that reflects Florence’s enduring reverence for knowledge and art by elevating and protecting rare works. The project is organized around a luminous central stair wrapped in a perforated metal screen adapted from David Adjaye’s corona pattern. Originally conceived as an exterior shading system for the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the pattern is re-scaled and applied here as an interior device. The pattern filters light and frames views, allowing the stair to function as a literary beacon and a vessel for memory and cultural storytelling within the historic structure.
As visitors ascend, the stair guides them toward increasingly rare collections above. Interior openings and balconies maintain a visual connection to this luminous core, while the street-level café grounds the project in the everyday life of the city.
